Breaking Down the Stereotypes: 6 Myths About Dating With a Disability

In the world of dating with a disability, there are more than a few misconceptions floating around. Whether these myths are promoted by an unknowing media or even by well-intentioned friends, one fact is true.

And that’s that these stereotypes aren’t just inaccurate. In reality, they can also prevent you from enjoying a meaningful relationship with the significant other of your dreams.

But at Special Bridge, we know that dating with a disability isn’t about stereotypes. In fact, it’s all about searching for that someone who will connect with you, understand you, and care about you because of who you are.

It’s even about discovering more about what makes you unique as a person, for friendship and love. And that’s why, today, we’re breaking down the stereotypes surrounding dating with a disability!

MYTH 1: People with disabilities require constant accommodation

Although every situation is different, the fact is that many people with disabilities have lives that are similar to anyone else’s. This includes having regular jobs, going out on the weekends, pursuing hobbies, and working in an office. And often, any accommodations that are needed aren’t an ordeal or a burden, but simply a different way of doing things.

MYTH 2: Regular dates aren’t possible when dating with a disability

On that note, let’s talk about what dating with a disability might entail. While some people might think that people with disabilities can only go on certain types of dates, reality tells a different story. Going out for dinner, seeing a movie, enjoying a sporting event, even traveling abroad for extended trips. These are all part of dating when you’re with someone who may have a disability.

MYTH 3: People with disabilities don’t have sex lives

So, what about having a healthy sex life? It may be a slightly more sensitive topic, but myths still surround this subject when it comes to dating with a disability. Truthfully, making love is a unique experience between any two people, no matter who they are. And being disabled doesn’t stop you from embracing your sexuality or connecting on this deeper level with your partner.

MYTH 4: If you have a disability, you’re the same as everyone else with one

But the uniqueness doesn’t stop there. Too often, you might have seen how people with disabilities all are lumped together, as if everyone was exactly the same. Yet, this is a complete myth and masks the truth… dating with a disability is all about who you are as an individual, from your personal experiences to your hopes and dreams.

MYTH 5: There’s no one out there for you when you’re dating with a disability

Depending on your situation, you may feel like you’ve struggled to make meaningful connections. This can be true whether you’re looking for friendship or love. And while dating with a disability can come with its own set of challenges, you’re not alone. In fact, nothing says that you can’t have a strong, fulfilling relationship with someone who rocks your world!

MYTH 6: There aren’t any sites out there for dating with a disability

    #2 and #3 aren’t myths. They’re the truth. #5 and #6 are half-myth, half-truth.
