6 Organizations That Support Different Disabilities

Life is always getting better for people with disabilities.

With recent advancements in medical technology and practices, those with disabilities are living longer and healthier lives. This also means organizations that work with those who live with disabilities need more help.

Of course, this isn’t a bad thing. It means those organizations are doing the work well and fulfilling their missions.

But this is where you come in.

Volunteering for even just an hour a week can help change people’s lives. And it will certainly change yours. But where do you jump in? Who out there needs your help?

Below, you’ll find six organizations that support different disabilities.

1. The Arc Supports Different Disabilities

The Arc is the largest community-based organization in the United States that serves people with disabilities. Their goal is to empower and help both those with disabilities and their families. They work with over 100 diagnosed disabilities.

And they provide residential housing and support, family support, education and individual advocacy, and employment and referral services.

2. Parents Helping Parents

Parents Helping Parents started in 1976, as a non-profit agency. They specialize in children with special needs and different disabilities.

But this doesn’t just include children with disabilities. They also work with children who were diagnosed with cancer and other major illnesses. It’s a parent-directed organization that works with the community. provide information, support, and training for families with special needs children.

Its goal is to provide information, support, and training for families with special needs children.

3. Friendship Circle International

This Jewish organization is the fastest growing in the world. Friendship Circle serves thousands of children with disabilities.

They also specialize in cultivating volunteerism among teens with disabilities. They understand how important it is to integrate people with disabilities into their communities.

Much of history focused on separating people with different disabilities from society. And it’s refreshing to find an organization who focuses on the opposite.

4. Special Olympics

Physical exercise and activity are important for anyone. But it’s especially important for those with disabilities.

Special Olympics set out to inspire people to reach their full potential both on and off the playing field. Their goal: to help people with disabilities discover new skills, abilities, strengths and success through sports.

Find out if Special Olympics is holding an event in your community. They are always looking for volunteers.

5. United Cerebral Palsy

Despite the name, United Cerebral Palsy works with people who have different disabilities.

Independence is their main goal. They want to see individuals with disabilities lead full and productive lives as citizens among their peers and other adults. They use an affiliate network throughout the United States.

This connects families and individuals for empowerment.

Their services include employment support, family support, advocacies, health and wellness education, housing support, and financial assistance.

6. Birth Injury Justice Center

The Birth Injury Justice Center is an online resource for anyone who has been affected by birth injuries, cerebral palsy, brain injuries, Erb’s palsy or other disabilities.

The organization was created to provide answers and guidance to help families and children get all the assistance they need to help improve their overall quality of life.

Find An Organization and Be The Change

This is merely a sampling of what’s out there. If you don’t join up with one of these organizations, find a local organization in your community.

They are almost always looking for volunteers or even employees. Get out there and be the change you want to see in the world.

My 50 yr old son just had his 6th stroke and is now paralysed from the neck down. He has a feed tube and a tracheotomy. He needs a caregiver but Medicaid will only pay $12 per hour. He is in Lansing, Michigan. Is there anything you can do to help?

I am reaching out on behalf of my cousin and her husband Demetrius . They are disabled living off of one disability check which is the wife’s. The husband does not have the means to start the process of filing for disability. They are living in their home without hot water (hot water heater doesn’t work) no heat or air conditioning. The house is in bad condition. No one should live this way but there’s nothing they can do without help. The wife is incarcerated due t o a City/County ordinance fines but doesn’t have the means to pay. She has to serve five days instead of ten due to health issues and being disabled. I am just finding all of this out and I beg of you to please help them.
